The maturity scale

Amazon & Shopify pricing maturity levels

Where does your pricing operation sit?

Every audit maps your answers to a tier. Here's the scale so far.

L1

Gut

Prices are set by feel. There's no consistent way to track margin or watch what competitors are doing.

L2

Reactive

Margin gets tracked and competitors get watched — usually by hand — but prices only move once something forces the decision.

L3

Signal

Early signals get read and acted on before the market forces the issue, instead of catching up after the fact.

The scale continues to develop as more merchants complete the audit.

See the early numbers behind this scale in What Our Pricing Audit Is Revealing.

What the report looks like

What's in your Pricing Audit report

A real score. Specific next steps. Nothing generic.

L2 · Reactive Score 8 / 15

You're already tracking margin and keeping an eye on competitors — that's real infrastructure most merchants your size don't have. The next unlock is turning that habit into a rule you act on automatically, instead of only when a price change forces the question.

  • Add a hard price floor next to your landed cost for your top SKUs this week.
  • Sort SKUs into "can absorb a price change" vs. "shoppers will price-compare" before deciding where to move first.
  • Check whether your closest competitors are under the same cost pressure you are.

What the data shows

Common pricing mistakes Amazon & Shopify sellers make

Patterns from real Pricing Audit submissions — not theory.

Every completed audit feeds into how we think about pricing maturity. A handful of patterns show up again and again, regardless of platform or catalog size.

Margin gets tracked — but there's no margin floor

A spreadsheet with landed cost and margin per SKU is a real head start, and most sellers we see have one. What's usually missing is a margin floor — a hard minimum price attached to each SKU or ASIN, calculated from landed cost, not decided in the moment. Without it, the floor gets set on the spot, under pressure, the moment a competitor drops price or a cost increase hits.

A repricing trigger exists — but nothing happens between reviews

Scheduled reviews, rule-based alerts, and "a competitor moved" triggers are common. What's often missing is frequency: sellers who have a trigger still tend to act on it rarely, or on an annual cycle, which leaves weeks or months where prices quietly drift away from what the market will actually bear. Turning an occasional trigger into a continuously-applied rule is what Dynamic Pricing is built to do.

Every SKU gets the same treatment

Sellers who split their catalog into products with a close substitute versus products without one can raise price with confidence on the ones that can absorb it, and hold or bundle the ones that can't. Sellers who skip that split tend to either raise across the board and lose volume, or hold everywhere and leave margin on the table. Knowing which SKUs sit in which group is exactly what Market Intelligence tracks on an ongoing basis.

Amazon and Shopify prices get set independently

Dual-channel sellers often price each channel on its own — which means an Amazon price cut made to win back the Buy Box can quietly undercut the same SKU's Shopify margin floor, or the reverse, without anyone noticing until the two numbers are compared side by side. A Buy Box loss also isn't always a price problem — seller rating, fulfillment method, and Prime eligibility can lose it too, and cutting price for a non-price cause just gives away margin for nothing.

These aren't hypothetical — they're what the Pricing Audit is built to surface in your own numbers, in about two minutes.

A spreadsheet with landed cost and margin per SKU is a solid start, but on its own it isn't enough. Good margin tracking also includes a margin floor set in advance for each SKU or ASIN, so pricing decisions under pressure have a number to defend rather than being made on the spot.
